It must be tough sometimes to be a New York sports fan. I’m not from New York so I don’t understand their collective psyche. Which team do you choose to follow in the NHL, the MLB or the NFL? How do people choose? I guess it could be passed down from fathers and older brothers or maybe some people just randomly choose. I feel particularly bad for New York Jets fans this year since the New York Giants just won the Super Bowl. I wonder how many Jets football fans have secretly wished they had chosen to follow the Giants, or maybe even are considering switching teams? I imagine not too many, because there’s nothing like jets fans. You find the same thing with the Mets and Yankees. I listen to Howard Stern every morning on Sirius (based in New York City), and two of the guys who work on the show are big baseball fans. Side kick Artie Lange is an avid Yankees fan and Baba Booey (Gary Dell’Abate), Howard’s producer loves the Mets. How can this be? I even think that there’s a Boston Red Sox fan on the show as well. Also, if you like the Mets, do you have to automatically follow the Jets (and maybe even the Nets too?)
Frankly, it seems like New Yorkers have a plethora of entertainment options above and beyond pro sports. There’s plenty of other things to do in the Big Apple, and I imagine the choices can get overwhelming. For instance, how about buying some Broadway tickets? There’s a great list of top shows happening right now. You can go online and buy Wicked tickets, Jersey Boys tickets, Young Frankenstein tickets or even Lion King tickets for the kids.
There’s plenty of other top things to do in New York City. From live concerts, to great shopping or awesome bars and restraints, to Broadway shows or sports, the list is endless. But I just don’t know how I would choose a team to follow if there were two of them in the same sport in my city. Are there some people in New York who love the Yankees and Mets, or the Jets and Giants equally?
